Butterworth to East Rattlesnake March 23rd
Wednesday 1-3pm | Squam Lakes Association | 534 US Rte 3, Holderness
Hike up the Rattlesnake network before the mud season begins! Join the SLA for an afternoon hike up the Butterworth Trail to the East Rattlesnake summit. This is an out-and-back hike totaling 1.4 miles that involves a moderate uphill climb to the top of the summit. At the top, we’ll stop for a break to drink water, eat snacks, and take pictures of the view before heading back down. Please make sure to wear weather-appropriate attire.
What to Bring: Please wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and bring extra layers. Please also bring:
Water
Microspikes or snowshoes, depending on weather conditions. If these aren’t available to you, SLA is able to provide microspikes and snowshoes for up to six participants.
Hiking poles, if you have them. SLA is able to provide hiking poles for up to 3 participants.
Audience: Anyone able to hike on steep uneven terrain. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Location: Meet at the Butterworth Trailhead on Metcalf Road off of Route 113.

Discover Squam at Night March 26th

Join the SLA on a hike through the forest and to an overlook of Big and Little Squam. Increase your knowledge of the nocturnal and discover what happens in the woods and lake at night. What do plants do without the sun around? Do fish sleep? How do you tell one owl’s call from another? Be sure to bring warm layers and a headlamp or flashlight for this hike, which will take place at Whitten Woods and will include about two miles of walking over moderate terrain.
What to Bring: Make sure to bring weather appropriate hiking clothes, extra layers, water, and headlamps/flashlights.
The SLA can provide snowshoes & microspikes for up to six participants.
Audience: All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Location: Meet at Whitten Woods trailhead off of Highland Street in Ashland.
This 500+ acre property is owned by the New England Forest Foundation (NEFF), on which the Squam Lakes Conservation Society (SLCS) holds the conservation easement, and we maintain the trails.

Wild Winter Walk at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center March 26th
Saturday 10:00-11:30am | Squam Lake Science Center | 23 Science Center Rd, Holderness
Squam Lakes Natural Science Center offers a winter program for adults and families with children ages 6 and up. Learn about the animals who live at the Science Center during the winter. Most of them stay in the same place, just as they would in the wild. A staff naturalist will lead a guided walk on the live animal exhibit trail to see the animal ambassadors dressed in their winter coats and discuss how these native animals are well adapted for winter in New Hampshire. If needed, snowshoes are available at no extra cost or participants can bring their own. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This program is all outdoors. Dress to be outdoors with insulated snow boots, hats, gloves, and warm layers. Pre-registration is required for all programs at www.nhnature.org.
